Chairman of Italian club Crotone says Simy Nwankwo is not for sale after the Nigeria striker scored 20 goals to help them secure promotion to Serie A

Nwankwo finished as the top goalscorer in the Serie B last season.

Chairman of Italian club Crotone has revealed that Nigeria international Simy Nwankwo is not for sale after the striker scored 20 goals to help them secure promotion to the Serie A.

Nwankwo finished as the highest goalscorer in Serie B, the second division in Italy with 20 goals to help Crotone secure promotion to the Serie A.

Ahead of their return to the Italian top-flight, Crotone chairman Gianni Vrenna has ruled out selling the Nigerian striker.

We will keep at least nine of the 11 players for next season including Alez Cordaz, Junior Messias, Salvatore Molina, Simy (Nwankwo) and also Ahmad Benali, with which we are in the process of finding an agreement,” Vrenna told calciomercato.com.

Then we will try to strengthen the squad and make it compete with 3-4 category players.”

The chairman’s statement came amidst reports of interest in Nwankwo from Lazio and Udinese.

He went on to hail the 28-year-old and said he was one of the few people who believed in Nwankwo when the Nigerian first joined the club in 2016 from Portuguese side Gil Vincente.

“He is a player in my heart. Since he arrived, I have been one of the few who believed in him; who stimulated him and who was close to him. He is an exceptional man; he also took whistles and insults. Now is his time, I repeat: he is a great man, as well as a great player,” Vrenna also said.

Nwankwo has a contract with Crotone until 2023 following the three-year contract he signed just before the start of the 2019/20 season.
