Junior Agogo: Former Ghanaian striker reveals former teammates stopped talking to him after he suffered stroke

Agogo was enjoying after retiring from football before he suffered a stroke in January 2015. 

Former Ghanaian striker Junior Agogo has revealed that his former teammates stopped talking to him after he suffered a stroke.

Agogo was enjoying his life as a businessman after retiring from football before he suffered a stroke in January 2015. 

The stroke subsequently led to Aphasia, which left him with speech impairment.

Agogo appeared in a new BBC4 stroke documentary ‘Speechless’ where he talked about his recovery and struggle with speaking.

While talking about his football days, the 38-year-old pointed to some framed jerseys of former teammates and friends in the game.

When he was asked if he still talks with some of them, Agogo said; “Now nobody gets in touch with me, I used to talk with a couple of boys from the national team but when the stroke happened they all said no.

“Because I couldn’t speak,” he added.

Some of the framed jerseys include Michael Essien's Chelsea shirt, Didier Drogba's Cote d'Ivoire jersey and a Samuel Eto’o shirt.

The documentary is the first time Agogo, who is now cared for by his mother at his home in the United Kingdom, is opening up on his struggle and recovery from stroke.

Nigerians will remember Agogo very well from the 2008 (Africa Cup of Nations) AFCON where he scored against Nigeria in a 2-1 win in the quarter-finals.

 

He made 26 appearances for the Black Stars of Ghana.

He played for the likes of Bristol Rovers, Nottingham Forest and Barnet.
