Félicité wraps up AFRIFF screenings

After a week of movie screenings, industry sessions, trainings and seminars, the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), yesterday wrapped up movie screenings with a Senegalese movie, Félicité.

 

A French word for happiness, the movie dwells on life’s ironies and enduring love of a mother.

 

A film by Alian Gomis, Félicité revolves around a local singer, Félicité who desperately needs money for her 14 years old son, Samo who is involved in a motorbike accident.

 

Happiness is the least of her encounters as she soon trudges the streets finding a solution to her many problems. Ironically, as a bar entertainer, her job is to bring smiles to the faces of patrons.

 

However, her struggle to get funds after her child is hospitalized, sends her through a train of mishaps, even though she finds financial and emotional support from Tabu one of the regulars in the bar where she performs.

 

Véro Tshanda Beya Mputu, a Congolese actress, plays Félicité, a role which fetched her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

 

The movie also stars Gaetan Claudia (Samo), Papi Mpaka (Tabu), Nadine Ndebo (Hortense), Elbas Manuana (Luisant) and Kasai Allstars, a 25-piece musical collective based in Kinshasa, who play themselves.

 

In addition to Best Actress in a Leading Role, the movie also won awards for Best Film, and Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

 

Director of the flick, Alian Gomis is known for movies like Aujourd’hui, and L’afrance.

 

The 2017 edition of AFRIFF wraps up today with a Globe Awards which comes up at the Eko Convention centre, Eko Hotel and suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, at 7pm.
