The Nigerian tennis legend stayed away from Nigeria after the death of her fiancé.

Nigerian tennis star Funke Oshonaike has revealed that she once lost her fiancé three months before their wedding after he was shot while on holiday in Nigeria.

Oshonaike is regarded as one of the best Nigerian tennis players of her generation and has represented Nigeria at five Olympic Games.

But before she found success in tennis, the 42-year-old passed through some trying times when she lost her fiancé just three months before their wedding.

In a long and revealing post on her Facebook page, the six-time All Africa Games gold medallists recalled when she lost her fiance just three months to their wedding.

Although the details are still sketchy, Oshonaike revealed that she fell in love with a guy in Germany whom she wanted to get married to.

But three months before their wedding, her late fiance travelled to Nigeria for holidays where he was shot and killed by armed robbers.

3 months to our wedding, he went to Nigeria on holiday and he was shot by armed robbers ! I went through hell here in Germany without him,” she wrote on her Facebook post.

“I mourned him for 2yrs, stopped going to Nigeria because of him but still never gave up on TT and living. That was my decision.”

Oshonaike is now married and based in Germany with her family.

In the Facebook post, the six-time Olympian also highlighted some of the challenges she has faced since she was a kid.

She further revealed that she has been spending her money to represent Nigeria and can’t remember the last time she was paid any money for winning for her country.

I’m very hurt about a lot of things that’s happening in sports in Nigeria but because of the love I have for my country, I’m still trying my best to keep on keeping on. That’s my decision,” she also said in her post.

She ended her post by stating that she is getting ready for Tokyo 2020, which would be her seventh Olympic Games.
