Sophia Omidiji: Oyinbo girl invited to Super Falcons for friendly against France

Sophia Omidiji was given birth to in the United States but plays for S.B.V. Excelsior in the Netherlands.

Oyinbo girl Sophia Omotola Omidiji has been called up by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for the Super Falcons friendly against France.

The Super Falcons take on their French counterparts in an international friendly game on Friday, April 6 at the Stade MMArena, Le Mans.

The NFF and newly unveiled Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby earlier released a 17 woman list for the friendly encounter against France which Sophia was not included.

Sophia currently plays for S.B.V. Excelsior in the Netherlands  and was part of the crew that unveiled the new kits for the national team set-up that caused massive reactions on social media

Sophia has previously been called up to the Falconets team for the World Cup qualifiers in 2015, but has been called up to the senior women's team set up for the first time to take part in the game against France.

 

The French women's national team are also preparing for the encounter and have called up Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain stars for the game while missing from the Falcons list is star player and three-time African women’s footballer of the year Asisat Oshoala who was stopped from the friendlies by her club Dalian Quanjian.

Sophia was given birth to in Las Vegas, American and plays as a defender.

She took to her official Instagram account to express her delight after receiving the call-up which could see her make her debut for the senior national team.

 

The message said, “Honored and Proud to have gotten a callup with the Nigerian women’s National team @thenffofficial for the friendly against France this coming Friday. Will give everything I’ve got and then some for the country. Can’t gram or tweet how this feels- it’s indescribable.”

Despite being brought up outside the country Sophia is thrilled to represent Nigeria as she stated that she has over the years the women's football team who are eight time champions of Africa.

“Honored and delighted to go do battle with my sisters- all deserving and amazing players that I’ve watched over the years that have all made our country proud. Dreams definitely do come true. Just a small girl from vegas with passion for football and green white green runnin through her veins.”

“Every and anybody that’s ever believed in me, said something positive about me, encouraged and motivated me and contributed to this- I thank you. Truly no words to describe the feeling but to thank everyone.”

 

At just 20-years-old Sophia has played for PSV / FC Eindhoven and KAA Gent before her move to S.B.V. Excelsior.

Omidiji is expected to join the Falcons team on Wednesday, April 4 as they begin preparations for the friendly game against France.
