Nigerian athlete Ese Brume was given a huge welcome by her school in Cyprus after she won bronze for Nigeria at the 2019 IAAF World Championships.
Brume’s won Nigeria’s only medal at the championships in Doha, Qatar following her third-place finish in women’s long jump which gave her a bronze medal.
The 23-year-old was given a heroic welcome by the Eastern Mediterranean University on her return from Doha.
“So my school actually gave me a surprise welcome at the airport. I was astonished,” the Delta State-born athlete wrote on her Instagram.
“This is the best moment of my life. I've never been this honoured.”
Brume jumped a distance of 6.91m, her second-longest career jump to take home the bronze medal. She did well to finish behind pre-championship favourite Malaika Mihambo from German who leapt a distance of 7.30m and United States’s Kenyattia Hackworth who jumped a distance of 6.92m.
Career wins
Brume’s win in Doha continues her impressive track record.
In the long jump, she has won three gold medals at the national level, two at the African Junior Championships, one in the African Championships, one in the African Games, another in the Commonwealth Games and the bronze from the 2019 IAAF Championships.
In Triple Long Jump, she has a silver and gold medal from the African Junior Championships while she won a bronze medal in the 100m at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Brume also won two African Junior Championships’ gold medals in the 4x100m.
