Obafemi Martins on the verge of rejoining Shanghai Shenhua to fill Odion Ighalo’s void

Martins spent almost three years at Shanghai Shenhua before his contract was cancelled.

Veteran Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins is currently in China where he is set to sign to rejoin Shanghai Shenhua to fill the void left by his fellow countryman Odion Ighalo.

Shenhua is without a striker following Ighalo’s loan move to Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Martins who played two years at Shenhua has arrived in China where he will train with the club.

A source very close to the striker told Pulse Sports that he will train with the club for two weeks before any decision will be made.

Martins has not played football for a long time, so he will train with Shanghai Shenhua for two weeks and will be signed if he is fit,” the source said.

With the Chinese Super League (CSL) which was suspended due to the spread of coronavirus expected to start in late March, Martins has enough time to train with the club and prove his fitness.

The 35-year-old first joined Shanghai Shenhua in February 2018 and played for them for three seasons.

It was in the third season that the Nigerian sustained an injury during an Asian Champions League game against Kashima Antlers on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.

While he struggled to regain fitness, his contract with the club was cancelled and he has been clubless ever since.

The striker spent all his time away from football in Lagos where he continued to train.

Martins in his first season with Shanghai Shenhua scored 15 goals. He netted 13 in his second and was on four in this third before the injury.
