Hotbillz - Gift of Life [EP Review]
Hotbillz is talented, but he needs intense artist development.
Hotbillz is not the most talented vocalist. His talent is in his expansion of his vocal limitations with his formative delivery. He also seems to have a great pen to write songs. Whenever he’s discussing topics that relate to life, life’s necessities and personal topics, he gets progressively better.
His music can best be described as aspirational. Even when he sings in first-person about certain topics, he has a tell that makes an attentive listener realize that Hotbillz is only singing about hypothetical happenstances. Nonetheless, he finds ways to project the plus sides of his talent.
‘Gift of Life’ is built on an Afro-pop-Palmwine music hybrid production with memorable melodies. It sees Hotbillz show gratitude for the ‘Gift of Life’ while he speaks his aspirations and dreams into life. He sings, “The blessings pouring on me…”
‘Inside (Feelings)’ seems more organic as the Gospel-esque production which houses Hotbillz as a loverboy, infatuated with a woman. He is willing to cry so she would give him a chance. With desperation in his voice, he sings, “I wish to show you what I’m feeling inside…”
That title, ‘Inside (Feeling)’ should have been better though. Byno sounds like Diamond Platnumz as he aids Hotbillz on more love-filled quests on Ghanaian Afro-pop-esque, ‘I Dey.’
‘Good Life’ also features Byno. He aids Hotbillz to speak with the God about providence, prosperity and protection. Byno dreams big, to buy his mom and family members the best things.
‘Finish Work’ is more of an affirmation of talent. But it’s becoming too much of a trend to see Hotbillz gets outshine on his own songs by his features. Nonetheless, the song discusses good things on a Reggae-Fusion record. ‘Hold Me Down’ goes back to the topic of love. Bwealth and Josh Keyngz aid the conversation.
Final Thoughts
Hotbillz is talented, but he needs intense artist development. He also needs intense A&R. For now, this EP is a step in the right direction. He also needs to sing about real things, and tell real stories.
