A’Ibom metering factory will protect Nigerians from high electricity tariffs- Osinbajo

Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday that the new metering factory in Onna local government area of Akwa Ibom State would complement federal government’s resolve to ensure that Nigerians enjoy a steady and efficient electricity supply.

The Vice President commissioned the factory as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of the creation of Akwa Ibom State.

He added that the metering factory would protect electricity consumers from high tariffs charge by distribution companies (DISCOS).

Besides, he said government was considering having independent metering agents.

“It is open now and anybody can take a batch of consumers on meters,” he said.

“This is an important innovation because it means there is no restriction on those who can actually meter our consumers,” he said, pointing out that distribution companies (DISCOS) and electricity firms would no longer hide under the excuse of lack of meter to over burden electricity consumers with high tariffs.

Osinbajo, who also commissioned the renovated General Hospital at Etinan Local Government and a syringe manufacturing company, lauded the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel for creating an enabling environment for industrial renaissance in the country.

Speaking earlier, Emmanuel said government was determined to provide each household in the state with power supply.

With the metering company in place, the governor said consumers would key into having power in their homes.
