PDP convention: ‘Southwest may have consensus candidate’
A national chairmanship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prof. Tunde Adeniran, yesterday said the Southwest may produce a consensus candidate ahead of next week’s convention of the party in Abuja.
The former minister of Education told party members and delegates at the PDP secretariat in Akure, the capital, that candidates from the region had been talking with one another.
This, he said, could pave the way for aspirants to agree on one person.
Adeniran said: “We are talking among ourselves and I believe one way or the other we will get it right. I also believe that God will step in.”
On the rumour that he was sponsored by the senator representing Ogun East, Buruji Kashamu, the former PDP national secretary described the report as the handiwork of his political detractors.
He said some people carried a similar rumour that former military leader Gen. Ibrahim Babangida was sponsoring him.
According to him, others pointed at former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as well as former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Adeniran said the rumour was aimed at pulling him down.
Ondo State PDP Chairman Clement Faboyede said there was need for the party to elect a better candidate to lead the party to victory in the 2019 presidential election.
