Premier League: England to get 2 weeks winter break

David Silva Winter Break

There is a proposal for a two weeks break for Premier League teams which is being considered by the English FA

The English Premier League is getting closer to announcing week football break in February, starting from the 2019/20 season.

A report by the Guardian reveals that the reason behind the idea is to give England a better chance when Euro 2020 Kicks off.

The Premier League is the only English division proposed to get the winter break, as the proposal does not include the English Championship, League One and League two.

The proposal includes scrapping second leg FA Cup matches from the third and fourth round.

Paul Tisdale, manager of League Two outfit Exeter is not pleased with the development.

He said, “It really is once every 10 years your club has that and it makes a difference. We played Liverpool in 2016 in a replay and made enough money in that tie to pay for artificial turf facilities for our academy. It allowed us to have the biggest improvement to our facilities in 10 years thanks to one game so it would be really unfortunate if we lost replays completely.”

However the Carabao Cup semi-finals will still be a home and away fixture, as EFL executive Shaun Harvey confirmed, “There are no plans to move it from a two-leg semi-final.” He said

The decision on the proposed Winter break will be made by the English Football Association (FA).

If approved the Premier League will join fellow European Leagues, such as the German Bundesliga, the Italian Serie A , the French Ligue 1 and the Spanish La Liga which take breaks .
