Super Eagles: Maradona is still mad at Nigeria's win over Argentina

Argentine Legend Diego Maradona is still angry about the Super Eagles victory in a friendly match

Diego Maradona is still mad about the Albiceleste defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a friendly match played in November, 2017.

Nigeria defeated Argentina 4 - 2 in a preparatory World Cup match, but Maradona is still angry about the outcome of the game.  

He said, “Today, except for Lionel Messi teams don’t fear Argentina again. Look at the last game against Nigeria; they nearly scored eight goals against us. In my time you know what happened when we played them."

 

The Argentine football legend also believes that Lionel Messi is the only reason teams are afraid of Argentina going into the World Cup.

Maradona believes Argentina has lost the fear factor that usually accustomed to previous World Cup winners.

“The problem with Argentina is that we don’t have good defence and midfield. People talk about Lucas Biglia but he is not the best for me. Unfortunately they are always afraid to say it,” he said

Maradona wants Jorge Sampaoli replaced as Argentina's coach, and admitted that his compatriot is lucky to have Messi

He said, “Jorge Sampaoli is lucky we have Messi in the team because when he is in top form he can cover the mistakes of others."

Maradona a previous World Cup winner at the 1986 tournament in Mexico believes that Lionel Messi will be key to Argentina’s title hopes in Russia.

 

“If he hits top form in Russia, then we have 60 percent of becoming the champion with others complementing his effort.”

The Argentine legend was recently denied passage into the United States for a court case by President Donald Trump.

Argentina are grouped alongside Nigeria, Croatia and Iceland at the World Cup.
