The Super Falcons of Nigeria now have a mountain to climb after Zambia ran riot over Equatorial Guinea.

The Shepolopolo of Zambia beat Equatorial Guinea 5-0 to top the Super Falcons of Nigeria in their opening group B game of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AWCON) played on Sunday, November 18.

Zambia produced a dominant display in the highest scoring game of the ongoing 2018 AWCON.

After the Super Falcons of Nigeria lost 0-1 to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa, Zambia knew a two goal victory will give them the lead in group B of the tournament.

The first half ended 2-0 in favour of the Zambians as they dominated their opponents Equatorial Guinea from tart to finish.

Grace Chanda scored the opener for Zambia as early as the seventh minute before Ireen Lungu doubled their lead before the half time break.

The Shepolopolo continued from where they stopped in the first half as Racheal Kundanaji made in 3-0 in their favour in the 57th minute.

Immaculada Abang scored the fourth in the 71st minute while Kundanaji scored her brace in the 87th minute to wrap up the scoring.

The result meant that Zambia are now top of the group level on points with South Africa but have a superior goal difference, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea are yet to register any point.

Speaking after the game at the press conference man of the match winner Kundanaji said, "Gone are the days we were scared of Nigeria. This is not the old Zambia. We are wound buffaloes."

 

The Super Falcons of Nigeria will aim to bounce back when they take on Zambia in their next fixture while South Africa take on Equatorial Guinea who replaced Kenya, as both matches will be played on Wednesday, November 21.
