Alex Iwobi helps Everton to keep the shape in 1-1 draw against Liverpool

Alex Iwobi had nothing much to do when Everton hosted Liverpool on Sunday evening.

It was far from an electric performance for Alex Iwobi but perhaps, it wasn’t what was required of him when Everton hosted Liverpool in a Premier League game on Sunday, June 21.

Iwobi played from the right of midfield but with Liverpool dominating possession the whole time on the pitch, all the Nigerian could do was help his side keep the shape.

Carlo Ancelotti’s defence sat very deep all game and gave Liverpool little room to go behind in typical manner.

To support the defence, Iwobi was given the job to help his side keep the shape which he did. He hardly left the Everton half of the pitch as he had to always check the run of the leftback James Milner and later Joe Gomez.

Everton’s forays were rare and Iwobi only had one situation in attack where he threatened to create a chance. He dribbled inside past Milner and passed to Dominic Calvert-Lewin who was well checked by the Liverpool defence.

In his 88th minute on the pitch, the 24-year-old managed just 25 touches in an eventful evening at the Merseyside derby.

Though he did his job well, Iwobi still lacked the robustness to truly cause danger from the right in that setup.

He’s still not a player with pace and he failed to provide width anytime Everton attacked which was rarely.

To his defence, Iwobi’s best games for Everton have come when he played in the middle and even he will be wondering what he has to do to get that chance again.
