Nigerian Players Abroad: Chidozie Awaziem's horrible defending leads to Leganes' loss while Mikel Agu impresses in Portugal

We review the performances of Europe-based Nigerian players in action on Tuesday.

A host of Nigerian players were in action across Europe on Tuesday, July 30.

In Spain, Italy, England and Portugal, we look at how these players fared for their respective clubs.

Super Eagles fullback Ola Aina played in a wing-back role as usual in Torino’s 2-1 home loss to Lazio on Tuesday. Aina was taken off in the 70th minute when the score was 1-1.

Awaziem's poor showing

In Spain, Chidozie Awaziem showed off some shocking defending as Leganes were thrashed 3-0 at home by Sevilla. Awaziem was introduced in the seventh minute to replace his compatriot Kenneth Omeruo who was injured and could have done better in all the three goals Leganes conceded.

He didn’t make enough effort to block Oliver Torres’ shot from outside the area for Sevilla’s first goal and was beaten one-on-one for the visitors’ second.

For Sevilla’s third, it was his poor headed clearance that fell to Munir El Haddadi in the box before the Sevilla No. 11 curled past Leganes goalkeeper.

Leganes are 19th on the La Liga table and have a slim chance of staying up.

Awaziem’s performance on Tuesday wasn’t the case at the DW Stadium where Leon Balogun helped Wigan keep a clean sheet in their impressive 3-0 home win over Stoke City in the Championship. That was his seventh game for Wigan.

Also in England, Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo played some minutes of Manchester United’s 3-0 win away at Brighton in a league game.

In Portugal, Nigerian midfielder Mikel Agu posted a fine performance which he capped with an assist in Vitoria SC’s 2-0 home win over Vitoria FC in the Primeira Liga.

Agu did well to win the ball in midfield before laying the ball to Leandrinho who had so much to do before firing past the opposition goalkeeper for the first goal of the game.
