The movie will make its debut on the streaming platform on February 12, 2018.

 

About "Inxeba" (The Wound)

Xolani, a lonely factory worker, travels to the rural mountains with the men of his community to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood.

His entire existence starts to unravel when a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best-kept secret, a forbidden love.

Directed by John Trengove, written by Malusi Bengu and Thando Mgqolozana, the movie stars Nakhane Touré, Bongile Mantsai, Niza Jay among others.

Controversy surrounding "Inxeba"

After 2017 Durban Intl. Film Festival, where the controversial film screened, the Xhosa king and other traditional leaders called for a boycott from the Xhosa community.

They protested against what they described as an appropriation of Xhosa culture.

The recent protest by members of the Xhosa community has forced several cinemas to cancel screenings.

On February 2, 2018, the film opened in just eight out of 16 cinemas that were originally scheduled to screen the movie.

The producer of "Inxeba" on the backlash

The producer of "Inxeba" says the backlash against the movie comes from 'deep-rooted homophobia.'

According to him, there is nothing dirty about love between two men.

"The controversy is that the film was mixed with a "dirty gay thing" and a sacred ritual (the Xhosa initiation process) and there's nothing dirty about love between two men," the producer, Elias Ribeiro told African News Agency.
