Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: 5 things you should know about Arsenal new striker
These are five things you should know about the striker.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in the news right now, following his move from Borussia Dortmund to Arsenal.
Aubameyang completed his move to Arsenal after the Premier League giants paid a record £56m to Dortmund.
These are five things you should know about the striker.
1. Started his career at AC Milan
Born in France to Gabonese parents, Aubameyang started his career at Italian giants AC Milan in January 2007. He however never got to establish himself in the club was sent loaned out four times to Dijon, Lille, Monaco and Saint-Etienne.
2. First African highest-goalscorer in the Bundesliga
Aubameyang is the first African player to win the Golden Boot in the Bundesliga. In the 2016-2017 season, the 28-year-old scored 31 goals- more than Robert Lewandowski in the Bundesliga to finish the highest goalscorer of the season, becoming the first African player to achieve that feat.
3. International career
Aubameyang was invited to play for Italy U-19s but he turned them down to represent France where he was born. He played for France U-21 and was eligible to play for Spain because he has Spanish nationality.
He, however, decided to represent Gabon, the country of his father and made his debut for the African country in March 2009.
4. Faster than Bolt?
Aubameyang is known to be very fast and the striker has claimed to be faster than sprint legend Usain Bolt.
When Bolt set the 100m world record in 2009, he clocked 3.78 seconds over the first 30 metres in Berlin.
"When I was with the Milan youth teams I ran 30 metres in 3.9sec, that was official, but I've run it in 3.7sec too," Aubameyang told German daily Bild.
5. Bad boy
Aubameyang’s stats cannot be disputed but the query over his career so far has been in attitude and temperament.
His impressive stint with Dortmund has been tainted by his outlandish behaviour especially towards the end of his stay at the German club.
In the last 16 months, the striker has been disciplined by three different coaches at Dortmund.
Shaving the logo of Nike, his private sponsors into his air while Dortmund are backed by Puma first raised eyebrows at the club.
In November 2016, he was dropped by then Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel for taking a private jet to Milan, just before a Champions League game.
He brought tension to the Dortmund camp where he checked his dad and brother into the team hotel during a winter training camp in Spain.
He also dropped from the squad in November for arriving late to training and another time for missing team meeting.
