Fire guts PHEDC sub-station in Akwa Ibom
The Port Harcourt Electricity Development Company (PHEDC) power substation at Afaha Ube, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State was gutted by fire on Thursday.
The Nation gathered that there was huge blast at the sub-station at about 1:00 p.m. and this sparked the fire.
The fire, according to eyewitnesses, lasted about one hour.
The state fire service did not respond to the emergency call, citing lack of water and other logistics.
But for the quick intervention of Julius Berger trucks which arrived with water to battle the inferno, it would have extended to other areas.
“The fire exploded like a bomb. We became panicking as we thought it was a bomb. And within a short time, we noticed thick smoke enveloping the power substation. It was then it occurred to us that we were in trouble.
“The flame was fierce. Many of the residents here and other adjoining streets began to flee the area. We were lucky that Julius Berger fire trucks arrived less than one hour later to quell the inferno,” an eyewitness said.
