ANRP aspirant promises to restructure economy

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP), Tope Fasua, has called for what he described as economic restructuring to guarantee a better life for Nigerians.

He promised to tackle poverty and unemployment, if elected in next year’s general elections.

The 47 year-old businessman-turned politician said his government will create an enabling environment for investment and business to thrive, stressing that the private sector will be strengthened to create jobs.

Fasua, who has released his manifestos to the public, said job creation is absolutely critical for Nigeria because of the soaring population of unemployed youths.

He said: “I note that the private sector is not in the business of creating jobs, but in maximizing profits, using a little human resources. The drive for private sector employment generation needs a fillip, which is responsibility from the government and public sector. That is why despite all the calls and programmes and drive towards entrepreneurship, Nigeria still suffers up to 65 per cent youth employment.”

The aspirant, who is also the party’s national chairman, reflected on the security situation, saying that the country needed a new approach that will emphasise greater youth participation in intelligence gathering.

He said he will stem the rural-urban drift by focusing on rural and urban renewal, with a particular emphasis on ‘very low income housing’ and a concerted effort at halting the spread of shanties and slums.

Fasua called for greater participation of women in politics and governance, saying that womenfolk can no longer be held down.

He said: “All positions in government are open to women. Women are smarter and in many ways stronger. I commit to 50 per cent affirmative action. We are sure Nigerian women can no longer be held down.”

The aspirant promised to defend the health sector through proper funding to stem the brain drain syndrome.

Fasua said he will introduce curriculum reforms in the school system to enable students focus on subjects that foster mutual understanding and cohesion in the country.

He added: “The study of history and sociology will be a must for primary and secondary schools, and higher institutions. We must learn about ourselves. A number of challenges we face result from the pervading ignorance in the land about sociological and historical issues. We shall cause to be prepared and circulated an anthropological map of  Nigeria, which show our cultural relatedness and the difficulty we will have in splitting into disparate parts.”
