Alex Iwobi: Arsenal legend tips midfielder to be successful under Emery
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has backed Alex Iwobi to become a star under Unai Emery.
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has tipped Alex Iwobi to be successful under new boss Unai Emery this season.
The 22-year-old made his 100th appearance for the Gunners in their 3-1 win over London rivals West Ham United in their last Premier League encounter.
Iwobi has played a peripheral role at Arsenal since his promotion to the first team under Arsene Wenger.
Wright revealed that Iwobi will thrive under the new Arsenal boss while on punditry duties for Sky Sports programme The Debate.
In his analysis, Iwobi's strengths and style of play are very much suitable to what the new manager requires.
He said, “Iwobi will be fine with it. He has the energy and the skill. He gets in the box and can score a goal. He could thrive.”
Wright who contributed 185 goals in a total of 288 appearances for Arsenal believes that the Nigerian midfielder is slowly winning the trust of Emery.
Iwobi did not feature in Arsenal’s first league game of the season to Premier League champions Manchester City but was given a start in the game against Chelsea which he scored and retained his spot against West Ham.
With Mesut Ozil struggling to impose himself on Emery’s team, Wright believes Iwobi’s characteristics will see him rise in the pecking order as he has not competition among the reinforcements brought in during the transfer window.
The Nigeria International stated that he is sharper under the new manager and will aim to retain his spot in the starting line up when Arsenal travel to face Cardiff City in the next fixture scheduled for Sunday, September 2.
