Profile: All you need to know about Chelsea's new boss, Maurizio Sarri

New Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri is a man whose name is very familiar in the footballing media space.

Despite not coaching many top European clubs, the Italian has made giant strides in the last three years, having etched his name in the hearts of many over his beautiful football style.

‘Sarriball’ has become a catchphrase, which is used to refer to the attacking, free-flowing football that Sarri implemented at Napoli.

But how much do you really know about the new Chelsea boss?

Maurizio Sarri started his career as a footballer. However, he never played professionally, with the 59-year-old only managing to play for an amateur side.

He later began coaching – a job which he combined with banking (Sarri is a professional banker too).

As a banker, Sarri worked in various European countries, including London, Switzerland and Luxemburg.

Sarri started his managerial career in 1990 by coaching a team called U.S.D. Stia 1925. It is a career which saw him manage from the lower tiers of Italian football all the way to the topflight.

The 58-year-old had his first Serie B job at Pescara, before winning promotion to Serie A with Empoli in the year 2014.

He then had his breakthrough and made a massive move to giants Napoli. Sarri had managed all his life in Italy and the Napoli job is the one he will be mostly remembered for.

In Naples, he introduced an attacking brand of football, which thrived on good and collective passing. There, he earned the respect of the football world, and the attention of some European heavyweights.

Although Sarri never managed to win a trophy with Napoli, he brought the club very close to ending Juventus’ dominance in the Serie A.

Chelsea then came calling and the former Avellino and Hellas Verona manager opted to move to London to join the Blues.
