Super Eagles: A review of how the 24-players invited for Seychelles clash fared with their clubs over the weekend

We review what the recently called up Super Eagles players were up to over the weekend.

Super Eagles boss Gernot Rohr has named a 24-man team for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Seychelles.

Nigeria face Seychelles on Friday, September 7 away in matchday two of the AFCON 2019 qualifiers.

How did the players fare with their clubs over the weekend?

Goalkeepers

Francis Uzoho (Elche)

 

On the same Friday, August 24 that Rohr announced his squad, Uzoho was busy finalising his loan move to Spanish Segunda Division (Division One) side Elche from Deportivo La Coruna.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Eyimba)

With the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) still on break, Enyimba goalkeeper Ezenwa was not in action over the weekend.

Daniel Akpeyi (Chippa United)

In South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, Nigerian goalkeeper Akpeyi played the whole 90 minutes in Chippa United’s 2-2 home draw against Black Leonards.

Defenders

Leon Balogun (Brighton)

Super Eagles defender Balogun was in action for Brighton in their 0-1 away loss at Liverpool. Unfortunately for Balogun, he had a hand in the goal they conceded at Anfield.

William Troost-Ekong (Udinese)

Balogun’s ‘Oyinbo Wall’ partner Troost-Ekong played the whole 90 minutes in Udinese’s 1-0 win over Sampdoria in their first victory of the season.

Kenneth Omeruo (Leganes)

 

Having secured another loan move away from Chelsea, this time to La Liga side Leganes, Nigerian defender Omeruo was not in action over the weekend as his new teammates were held to a 2-2 at home by Real Sociedad.

Chidozie Awaziem (Porto)

Now back at his parent club Porto, Awaziem was missing and not listed at all in their 3-2 away win over Belenenses.

Ola Aina (Torin)

Super Eagles right back Aina was in action for Torino in the Serie A as they held Inter Milan 2-2 at the San Siro.

Bryan Idowu (Lokomotiv Moscow)

Nigerian defender Idowu was on the bench all through as Lokomotiv Moscow beat Anzhi Makhachkala 2-1 at home.

Semi Ajayi (Rotherham)

 

Newly called up defender Semi Ajayi played the whole 90 minutes as Rotherham got a home 1-0 win over Millwall. Ajayi, a defender by trade played as a defensive midfielder all through the game, earning praises from his boss Paul Warne

Midfielders

Wilfred Ndidi (Leicester City)

 

Ndidi continued his impressive performances for Leicester City as he put up a strong showing to help them to a 2-1 win away at Southampton in the Premier League.

Oghenekaro Etebo (Stoke City)

Nigerian midfielder Etebo put in a strong performance for Stoke City in their 2-0 win over Hull City. Etebo was voted Man of the Match by Stoke City fans on Twitter.

Ogenyi Onazi (Trabzonspor)

Super Eagles midfielder Onazi was in action for 90 minutes in Trabzonspor's 2-2 draw away at Ankaragucu.

John Ogu (Be’er Sheva)

Ogu played the whole 90 minutes of Be’er Sheva’s 1-1 draw away at Ironi Kiryat.

Joel Obi (Chievo)

Nigerian midfielder Obi played the second 45 minutes of Chievo’s 1-6 loss at Fiorentina in the Serie A.

Kelechi Nwakali (Porto B)

Nwakali played for only 22 minutes as Porto B fell to their third consecutive defeat with a 0-2 loss away at Penafiel.

Forwards

Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray)

 

Back with the Super Eagles for the first time in almost a year, Onyekuru celebrated his recent call-up with a goal in Galatasaray's 6-0 home win over Alanyaspor on Monday, August 27.

Alex Iwobi (Arsenal)

Arsenal star Iwobi played just the first 45 minutes of their 3-1 home win over West Ham.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City)

Iheanacho played in Leicester City away 2-1 win over Southampton game for just over an hour before he was substituted.

Ahmed Musa (Al-Nassr)

Super Eagles forward Musa was not i action over the weekend as the Saudi Professional League is yet to start.

Odion Ighalo (Changchun Yatai)

 

Super Eagles striker Ighalo is in fine form ahead of the game against Seychelles. He scored for Changchun Yatai in their 2-2 draw at home against Hebei China Fortune.

Simy Nwankwo (Crotone)

In the Serie B, Nigerian striker Nwankwo was in action for Crotone but could not help them as they fell 0-3 away at Cittadella.

Samuel Kalu (Bordeaux)

Nigerian forward played the whole 90 minutes for Bordeaux in their 2-1 win over Monaco. He put up a fine performance in the game although he did miss a penalty during the Ligue 1 tie.
