‘Why Kashamu should not join APC’

A group, Ogun Youth Consultative Vanguard, has warned the All Progressives Congress (APC) about the consequence of welcoming Senator Buruji Kashamu to the party.

The group, which has an affiliation with the Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said APC should not admit the expelled lawmaker, until the drug allegations against him are resolved by the judiciary.

In a statement by its chairman, Adeshina Ezekiel and secretary, Johnson Adetoun, recalled that American authorities have pressed for the senator’s extradition to face charges for which his alleged conspirators have been tried, convicted and jailed.

According to the group, an American Court of Appeal in Chicago, Illinois, has ruled in 2016 that Kashamu must respond to the drug allegations against in in the United States.

It added: “The APC and the Federal Government need not be reminded by anyone that Kashamu is one senator and politician that they should not even touched with a six-foot pole. They should not even contemplate bringing him into the ruling party because of the embarrassment this would bring and the backlash it would generate in the international arena, especially regarding Nigeria’s image.”

The group said the senator wanted to join the APC pacify the Federal Government to intervene in this case pending before the Supreme Court.

It noted that Kashamu has succeeded in the lower courts to stall his arrest and extradition by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The group said: “The case of Kashamu is that of a drowning man, who will clutch to the tiniest straw in order not to sink, but remain afloat. His desperate plan now to join the APC is bereft of the smallest modicum of sincerity. He is only trying to take advantage political situation in the country to defect to the APC with the ultimate objective of getting a reprieve in his extradition matter now before the Supreme Court. He is only frantically and desperately looking for a hiding place under the cover of the ruling APC.”
