'X-Men: Dark Phoenix': Watch Jean Grey turn villian in trailer for the Fox superhero series
The Phoenix is upon us and Jean Grey is going against the X-Men.
Fox has released the first trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix, the fourth movie in Fox’s rebooted X-Men franchise. The film is preceded by 2011’s X-Men: First Class, 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.
In this installment, the X-Men will have to deal with a villain in their own ranks: Jean Grey, played by Sophie Turner, a mutant with telepathy and telekinesis who turns to darkness after being struck by a mysterious force during a space rescue mission.
Directed and written by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix adapts what is arguably the most essential X-Men story ever written: that of Jean and her relationship to the Phoenix, a powerful cosmic entity.
''You think you can fix me,'' the little Grey asks in the opening scene, with Professor X answering, ''You are not broken.''
In the new trailer, we see a glimpse of Jean’s chaotic childhood trauma, a car crash that kills her parents. The trauma is part of a bigger narrative that paints Jean as capable of hurting her loved ones with her powers, and Jean’s struggle to keep that from happening.
The preview shows the child Jean accidentally causing a car crash with her mind. From there, the trailer leaps forward in time, as the character struggles to maintain a firm grip on her powers. “She’s all rage, pain, and it’s all coming out at once,” Professor X says in voiceover.
