Stephen Odey says he is ready for the Super Eagles
Stephen Odey wants his goalscoring form for FC Zurich in Switzerland rewarded with a call-up to the Super Eagles.
FC Zurich striker Stephen Odey has stated that he aims to play for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the nearest future.
The 20-year-old forward has been in good goalscoring form for FC Zurich in Switzerland and is now regarded as one of the fastest rising players in Europe.
In a report by the Complete Sports, Odey stated that he is thankful for his rich vein of form but believes there are areas he can improve open.
He said, “I thank God for the present form and I hope it continues this way and even better.
“I think the collective effort and team spirit of the team has contributed to this and hopefully we can get to achieve success as a team.”
Odey is not among the 23 players called up by Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
The former star player of Mountain of Fire and Miracle (MFM) in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), is hopeful he if he continues his good form he can make the Super Eagles team next year.
He said, “I think I deserve the call- up now. A lot of Nigerian players (strikers) are doing well in Europe right now and I hope I will be given an opportunity to come and show how much I’ve learned in the game. I promise to give my best any time I’m called upon to represent Nigeria.”
To achieve the Super Eagles call-up, Odey has set a target of 20 goals this season after his form in the league and opening his account for Zurich in the Europa League against Bayer Leverkusen.
He said, “I’ve got eight goals now in all competitions and we are still in October. There are still a lot of games to be played between now and the end of the season both in the League and hopefully in the Europa League so reaching 20 goals should not be asking for too much, so help me God.”
The Nigerian forward returns to action when Zurich take on Blessing Eleke’s Luzern in their next league fixture scheduled for Sunday, November 4.
