Nigeria’s Women’s National Team, the Super Falcons have been nominated for the Women’s National Team of the Year award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
CAF released on Friday, November 30 released several shortlist for the respective categories of the 2018 CAF Awards.
In the Women’s National Team of the Year category, the Super Falcons have been nominated alongside Cameroon, Ghana, Mali and South Africa.
The 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) is the only tournament of the year and it will play a huge part in determining the winner.
The Super Falcons and Bayana Bayana of South Africa are through to the final of the 2018 AWCON. The winners do have a huge chance of getting the awards at the CAF Awards that will hold on Tuesday, January 8 in Dakar, Senegal.
South Africa won the award in 2017 and have continued to be the most impressive women’s team in Africa.
They have been the best team of the 2018 AWCON and their chances might not be affected by a loss in the final to Nigeria.
Nigeria won it in 2016 and are the highest winners (three times) in the history of the award after three wins.
The Women’s Player of the Year will be decided by the CAF Technical and Development Committee, media experts, legends, coaches of the quarter-finalists of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, coaches and captains of the national teams of the 54 Member Associations.
Dennerby nominated
Super Falcons boss Thomas Dennerby has also been included in the five-person shortlist for the Women’s Coach of the Year.
Dennerby got the Super Falcons job in January 2018 and led the team to a third-place finish at the 2018 WAFU Women’s Cup.
He also led the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2018 AWCON where they have gone all the way to the final.
