The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) have cancelled the 2019/2020 Nigeria Women’s Premier League (NWPL) season amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The NWFL made a unanimous decision at a virtual conference between the body’s management headed by Aisha Falode, club owners/chairmen and managers on Tuesday, July 7, 2020.
It’s not just the Premier League; all women’s leagues across the three tiers in Nigeria have also been cancelled.
Stakeholders at the conference agreed that all focus should be on the preparations for next season whose kickoff date would be on the orders of the Federal Government.
Originally scheduled to kick off on March 25, the 2019/2020 season never started as it had to be postponed indefinitely due to the lockdown that ensued .
Rivers Angels who won the NWPL title in 2019 will defend their title in the 2020/2021 season which doubles as the qualifiers for the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League.
For the 2020/2021 season, the NWPL will be played in a straight format for the first time since 2013/2014 season.
All football activities have been suspended in Nigeria since March 18 to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
No decision has been made yet for the men’s league although all parties involved have recommended cancellation of the season.
