Tragedy in Malawi as referee is charged responsible for death of player
Police in Malawi have charged referee McKnight Nyekheya for killing an unidentified player in the match between Billiat FC and Chilengo FC.
According to several reports, the Malawian police have arrested Nyekheya.
The district police spokesperson Benjamin Foster explained that the referee used a stick to hit the player and then disappeared after the unfortunate incident.
The players had to chase down the referee before he came out of a nearby house.
He said, “The referee picked up a stick and assaulted one player before he vanished into the maize field.”
The player on the receiving end by the referee was confirmed dead after he arrived at the hospital.
The referee is reported to be in the custody of the Chikwawa Police, where he will remain until he is arraigned in front of a judge to clear himself of the allegations towards him.
