Cristiano Ronaldo: Agent of Juventus star hits out at UEFA for award snub
According to Cristiano Ronaldo's agent, Modric did not deserve to beat his client to the UEFA Player of the Year award.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has hit out at the European football governing body for snubbing his client for the 2017/18 UEFA Player of the Year award.
The 33-year-old could not make it three awards in a row as former teammate Luka Modric emerged as the winner of the award.
Ronaldo’s agent has however leaped to the defence of his client and blamed the European football governing body for selecting the wrong candidate for the award.
Ronaldo who joined Juventus from Real Madrid finished behind Modric in the votes cast by the unions 60 coaches and 55 accredited journalists with 90 points less than the winner who amassed 313 points.
Speaking to the Record after the conclusion of the programme, Mendes defended Ronaldo’s stats in the previous season which he pointed out should have earned him the accolade.
He said, “Football is played on the field and that’s where Cristiano won.
" He scored 15 goals, carried Real Madrid on his back and conquered the Champions League again.
“It’s ridiculous, shameful. The winner is not in doubt, as Ronaldo is the best in his position.”
Giuseppe Marotta the director of Juventus also did not hold back in criticising the decision not to award their star player the top prize among the shortlisted candidates in Europe in an interview with Sky Sports.
He revealed that it was Ronaldo’s decision to attend the award ceremony and he has the full backing of the club.
He said, "The no-show was a personal decision of Cristiano, which we want to respect.
" Our criticism concerns a deep bitterness for this decision because the award refers to the Champions League and not to the World Cup and I believe that Cristiano Ronaldo has given the best emotions of the last edition and also fantastic goals.
"I take nothing away from the decision of journalists and coaches, but I would have voted for Cristiano Ronaldo and I say that as a football fan.
"His absence is a personal and private choice that has nothing to do with Juventus and must be respected. It would be nice for us to count some players among those who were given awards, but football is a team sport and we will face this Champions League with great determination."
Ronaldo will return to action of the field when he and his Juventus teammates travel to face Parma Calcio on Saturday, September 1 in their next Italian Serie A fixture.
